Asarul’Islam Mohammed Syed, M.D, a neurologist and a psychiatrist, studied at Pakistan’s prestigious Cadet College Hasanabdal and graduated in Medicine in 1976 from the King Edward Medical College, Lahore. He attained his postgraduate training in Neurology and Psychiatry from Kansas University Medical Center. He lives in Bakersfield, California and is Chief Psychiatrist, California department of Corrections at Wasco. His wife Nayla Syed,MD is a Child Psychiatrist.

Dr. Syed formally studied the Quran and Philosophy at “The Tolueislam Quranic Education Center” in Lahore, Pakistan, having been a pupil of Pakistan’s renowned Quranic scholar and thinker, G.A. Pervez. Dr. Syed worked as a physician in Saudi Arabia for seven years living in a small desert town, Sullayal. This enabled him an opportunity to learn and understand the Arabic language and metaphor, as spoken and used by the Beduins, the language of the Quran.

Pervez, an author of over 40 books on the subect of Quran and Islam, was a pupil of Dr. Sir Mohammed Iqbal, Ph.D, the poet philosopher, to whom is accredited the Pakistan idea, [1930] which lead to the partition of the Indian subcontinent and the creation of Pakistan. Iqbal’s several literary works include his famous “Reconstruction of Religious Thoughts in Islam.” The theme and purpose of these lectures, in words of Iqbal, is “To secure a vision of the spirit of Islam emancipating it from its Magian overlayings.” Iqbal, a professor of Arabic at the University of Cambridge, owed his anti-Magianism to his unique perceptive reading of the Quran. Reconstruction implies removing the Magian crust from Islam, by promotion from within Islam, awareness of the inductive intellect that stems from the Quran itself.

Perwez was also the advisor of Pakistan’s founder, Mohammed Ali Jinnah, who was a strong proponent of the need for Reconstruction of Islamic religious thought. In the year 1960 and again in the year 1966, about ten thousand Islamic clerics of Pakistan signed a religious decree, a “Fatwa,” declaring Pervez an apostate and a heretic and called for his death.

Pakistan was created as an independent country in 1947 having been carved out of India. Pakistan is an ideological state. It was the intention of the Muslims of the Indian Subcontinent to create an independent homeland where the classical theory of Islam could be put into practice. The only model available to them was the description, in the Quran, of a society that had liberated mankind from the shackles of superstition, exploitation of the poor by the rich and self-made religion. The Quran had come to the rescue of mankind 1400 years ago and had reunited mankind into one nation. Will the Quran do that again? Such was the dream!

The Islamic Clerics of India opposed the idea of Pakistan. To them Islam was a religion , an institution with 'five pillars' and all those pillars could erected without getting a separate independent homeland. The idea of Islam as a political institution and of the establishment of AL SALAAT, as a system of government was totally alien to their minds.
Jinnah was declared a heretic and an apostate. So was Iqbal. Pervez, Iqbal and Jinnah, in their writings and speeches, had openly and fearlesslydenounced and condemned the contemporary version of Islam.

Iqbal called it, “The Iranian Islam.” All pagan ideas had been reintroduced into Islam by the Hadith writers , all of who were of Iranian descent. Iqbal and Jinnah wanted to liberate and cleanse Islam.

“Islam, a living ideology, has been transformed into a most morbid religion by the vested interests of the autocrats and Kings who used the clergy to promote their interests. This clergy over the past one thousand years, organized itself into an institution of rituals and prayers, promoting a belief in magical happenings and superstition.

These priests cloaked the Kings and proclaimed their Divine rights and in return, the Kings granted them Divinity and respect. This morbidity became the message of God. For every wrong doing a tradition, Hadith, was coined stating that Mohammed himself did that.”

A pedophile eg. wanted a justification for his deeds and coined the stuff about Mohammed's wife Ayesha , reporting that Mohammed himself at the age of 54, had married a six year old girl. That is how Hadith were made. Another old man who suffered from an ear condition perhaps, and who was intolerant of a loud noise, coined the story that Mohammed thrust his fingers into his ears when he heard music. "That is what Mohammed did when he heard Music," he noted and thus, music became Haram.

Mohammed(s) and all the liberties that he stood for, were all confiscated.
Mohammed's followers had grown mentally in the liberal and open environment which the Quran had guaranteed, a liberal environment whose creative fruits had manifested in the making of Beduins into pioneers in Algebra, Chemistry, Physics, Astronomy and Medicine. The same Quran , when shackled with these HADITH of do's and don'ts , transformed this free society into a RELIGIOUS CULTURE of the lepers. There was a Hadith forbidding every creative activity. A system of prayers and how to please God was initiated. Instead of establishing the system of AlSalaat, Salaat became " THE PRAYER." Prayers and ritual became an addiction of this new cult of lepers. Thus started TALIBANISM. The Muslims of Spain strongly resisted this Taliban ideology. The great Ibne'Rushd (Averroes) was the pioneer philosopher of the movement of resitance referred to as Mu'tazillites. The Kings were successful in crushing this movement through their organized chruch, called Ahle'Sunnah. Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, the founder of Aligarh Muslim University, the cradle from which Pakistan was born, was also labelled a Muatazzilite.

The Kings supported this Talibanism out of their vested interests. To this day Talibanism has flourished because it serves the purpose of the Kings. No wonder Muslims today consider this as the purest Islam.

A most creative nation was thus transformed into a nation of infertile lepers. The most illuminating example are the Taliban of today.

The Quran too was translated "IN THE LIGHT OF THIS SUNNAH". Thus the Quran became an enigma wrapped in a mystery. The Iranians who had been defeated in the battlefield by the Arabs, thus in a very subtle manner, were able to destroy, the very fountain-head of the power of their enemy, THE QURAN, the ideology that had given strength and power to the poor, a new nation, which had turned slaves into masters. This was done very artfly. Iran's defeat was thus avenged.

“Islam is prospective, not retrospective. It is vis a fronte, not vis a tergo,” declared Pervez. [Islam: A Challenge To Religion]

The word ‘Quran’ means The Proclamation. It identifies itself with the Bible and the Torah as similar forms of revelations which were given to man so that mankind could thrive in Peace and Happiness. The Quran states that The Bible and The Torah and other such revelations were all aimed at providing to mankind, a structure of government, which guarentees equal distribution of resources of production and wealth so that human beings may happily develop in their lifetime, their potential abilities, maximally. Every person’s every need is to be met with, as responsibility of the state, and none shall have over and above one’s needs. This is the essence of The Quran, This is also the essence of the original Bible as revealed to Jesus and the original Torah. The Quran proclaims that priests transformed the Divine words in order to accommodate the interests of their employers, the Kings. Although the text of the Quran is in its original form, however, through interpretations based upon traditions coined by the Taliban of yesteryears, Quran shackled with the traditions[HADITH], was transformed into the greatest dogma of superstition, ignorance, abuse and exploitation known to man. The very forces of evil from which the Quran proclaimed to liberate mankind, became Islam’s hallmark.

Priesthood, Kings, Capitalists, whose legitimacy, the Quran challenges in a manner, that would discount any Luther, Nietzche, or Marx, in intensity, demeanor and logic, have today become the very symbols of Islam.

“There is no priesthood in Islam.”
The Quran denounces Priesthood
“There are NO kings in Islam.”

The Quran denounces autocracy.
“Islam abolished slavery 1400 years ago.”

“Islam liberated and emancipated women and
gave equal rights to women.”

Democracy is in the spirit of Islam. It turned
slaves into rulers and masters of the world.”

“This is not what the Quran teaches,” has been the outcry of the desperate Muslims over the past 1000 years. In recent times, Jinnah, Iqbal and Pervez are the most noteworthy amongst those that dared to raise their voices against the Islamic clerics. They had been condemning their versions of Islam, warning the work of the perils of this kind of Islam for nearly one century.

When President Bush declared on September 11th, 2001, “This is not what the Quran teaches. They [Mullahs] have hijacked Islam.” Muslims all over the world felt overjoyed with delight. This is the statement of the new millennium. Muslims are now looking forward to a new era that heralds Liberty from the shackles of this self-made TALIBANISM, the pseudo- Islam, of the Mullah.

Dr. Syed lectures on Islam and the Quran and has written several articles on Islam and the Quran.
